Our study group is comprised of mostly long time UB readers. We read the book sequentially. Last night we began on page 828 with the paper titled "Adam and Eve". After reading the first paragraph, we became side-tracked in a discussion about seraphic transport of non-combustion bodies, and the question came up of how they got the tree of life to Urantia from Edentia. Here's the paragraph from Paper 66, page 745, on the tree:

"These antidotal complements of the Satania life currents were derived from the fruit of the tree of life, a shrub of Edentia which was sent to Urantia by the Most Highs of Norlatiadek at the time of Caligastia's arrival. In the days of Dalamatia this tree grew in the central courtyard of the temple of the unseen Father, and it was the fruit of the tree of life that enabled the material and otherwise mortal beings of the Prince's staff to live on indefinitely as long as they had access to it."

Do you suppose it was enseraphimed on Edentia and sent here as a shrub, or was it rematerialized?

Regarding the arrival of Adam and Eve (p. 828), "Adam and Eve arrived on Urantia, from the year A.D. 1934, 37,848 years ago. It was in midseason when the Garden was in the height of bloom that they arrived. At high noon and unannounced, the two seraphic transports, accompanied by the Jerusem personnel intrusted with the transportation of the biologic uplifters to Urantia, settled slowly to the surface of the revolving planet in the vicinity of the temple of the Universal Father. All the work of rematerializing the bodies of Adam and Eve was carried on within the precincts of this newly created shrine. And from the time of their arrival ten days passed before they were re-created in dual human form for presentation as the world's new rulers. They regained consciousness simultaneously. The Material Sons and Daughters always serve together. It is the essence of their service at all times and in all places never to be separated. They are designed to work in pairs; seldom do they function alone."

What "substance" of Adam and Eve do you think was enseraphimed when they left Jerusem? What was the stuff that was rematerialized?

Dear Meredith,

Here are the references to dematerialization in the book.

P.400 - §7 The midsonite creatures live and function as reproducing beings on their magnificent worlds until they are one thousand standard years of age; whereupon they are translated by seraphic transport. Midsoniters are nonreproducing beings thereafter because the technique of dematerialization which they pass through in preparation for enseraphiming forever deprives them of reproductive prerogatives.

P.582 - §2 Adams and Eves are semimaterial creatures and, as such, are not transportable by seraphim. They must undergo dematerialization on the system capital before they can be enseraphimed for transport to the world of assignment. The transport seraphim are able to effect such changes in the Material Sons and in other semimaterial beings as enable them to be enseraphimed and thus to be transported through space from one world or system to another. About three days of standard time are consumed in this transport preparation, and it requires the co-operation of a Life Carrier to restore such a dematerialized creature to normal existence upon arrival at the end of the seraphic-transport journey.

P.582 - §3 While there is this dematerializing technique for preparing the Adams for transit from Jerusem to the evolutionary worlds, there is no equivalent method for taking them away from such worlds unless the entire planet is to be emptied, in which event emergency installation of the dematerialization technique is made for the entire salvable population. If some physical catastrophe should doom the planetary residence of an evolving race, the Melchizedeks and the Life Carriers would install the technique of dematerialization for all survivors, and by seraphic transport these beings would be carried away to the new world prepared for their continuing existence. The evolution of a human race, once initiated on a world of space, must proceed quite independently of the physical survival of that planet, but during the evolutionary ages it is not otherwise intended that a Planetary Adam or Eve shall leave their chosen world.

P.829 - §1 This Jerusem pair left behind them on the capital of Satania and elsewhere, one hundred offspring--fifty sons and fifty daughters--magnificent creatures who had escaped the pitfalls of progression, and who were all in commission as faithful stewards of universe trust at the time of their parents' departure for Urantia. And they were all present in the beautiful temple of the Material Sons attendant upon the farewell exercises associated with the last ceremonies of the bestowal acceptance. These children accompanied their parents to the dematerialization headquarters of their order and were the last to bid them farewell and divine speed as they fell asleep in the personality lapse of consciousness which precedes the preparation for seraphic transport. The children spent some time together at the family rendezvous rejoicing that their parents were soon to become the visible heads, in reality the sole rulers, of planet 606 in the system of Satania.

P.2022 - §5 At ten minutes past three o'clock, as the resurrected Jesus fraternized with the assembled morontia personalities from the seven mansion worlds of Satania, the chief of archangels--the angels of the resurrection--approached Gabriel and asked for the mortal body of Jesus. Said the chief of the archangels: "We may not participate in the morontia resurrection of the bestowal experience of Michael our sovereign, but we would have his mortal remains put in our custody for immediate dissolution. We do not propose to employ our technique of dematerialization; we merely wish to invoke the process of accelerated time. It is enough that we have seen the Sovereign live and die on Urantia; the hosts of heaven would be spared the memory of enduring the sight of the slow decay of the human form of the Creator and Upholder of a universe. In the name of the celestial intelligences of all Nebadon, I ask for a mandate giving me the custody of the mortal body of Jesus of Nazareth and empowering us to proceed with its immediate dissolution."

This temple of power is one of two sectors on Jerusem where ascending mortals and midway creatures are not permitted. The other one is the dematerializing sector in the area of the Material Sons, a series of laboratories wherein the transport seraphim transform material beings into a state quite like that of the morontia order of existence.

Shrub Brought By Melchizedeks

P.745 - §3 These antidotal complements of the Satania life currents were derived from the fruit of the tree of life, a shrub of Edentia which was sent to Urantia by the Most Highs of Norlatiadek at the time of Caligastia's arrival. In the days of Dalamatia this tree grew in the central courtyard of the temple of the unseen Father, and it was the fruit of the tree of life that enabled the material and otherwise mortal beings of the Prince's staff to live on indefinitely as long as they had access to it.

P.825 - §8 The "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" may be a figure of speech, a symbolic designation covering a multitude of human experiences, but the "tree of life" was not a myth; it was real and for a long time was present on Urantia. When the Most Highs of Edentia approved the commission of Caligastia as Planetary Prince of Urantia and those of the one hundred Jerusem citizens as his administrative staff, they sent to the planet, by the Melchizedeks, a shrub of Edentia, and this plant grew to be the tree of life on Urantia. This form of nonintelligent life is native to the constellation headquarters spheres, being also found on the headquarters worlds of the local and superuniverses as well as on the Havona spheres, but not on the system capitals.

P.826 - §2 During the days of the Prince's rule the tree was growing from the earth in the central and circular courtyard of the Father's temple. Upon the outbreak of the rebellion it was regrown from the central core by Van and his associates in their temporary camp. This Edentia shrub was subsequently taken to their highland retreat, where it served both Van and Amadon for more than one hundred and fifty thousand years.

"TREE OF LIFE"

In the days of Dalamatia this tree grew in the central courtyard of the temple of the unseen Father, and it was the fruit of the tree of life that enabled the material and otherwise mortal beings of the Prince's staff to live on indefinitely as long as they had access to it.

P.756 - §5 During the times of this struggle the loyalists dwelt in an unwalled and poorly protected settlement a few miles to the east of Dalamatia, but their dwellings were guarded day and night by the alert and ever-watchful loyal midway creatures, and they had possession of the priceless tree of life.

P.756 - §6 Upon the outbreak of rebellion, loyal cherubim and seraphim, with the aid of three faithful midwayers, assumed the custody of the tree of life and permitted only the forty loyalists of the staff and their associated modified mortals to partake of the fruit and leaves of this energy plant. There were fifty-six of these modified Andonite associates of the staff, sixteen of the Andonite attendants of the disloyal staff refusing to go into rebellion with their masters.

P.759 - §7 Van was left on Urantia until the time of Adam, remaining as titular head of all superhuman personalities functioning on the planet. He and Amadon were sustained by the technique of the tree of life in conjunction with the specialized life ministry of the Melchizedeks for over one hundred and fifty thousand years.

P.823 - §2 The committee almost unanimously favored the third selection. This site was chosen, and two years were occupied in transferring the world's cultural headquarters, including the tree of life, to this Mediterranean peninsula. All but a single group of the peninsula dwellers peaceably vacated when Van and his company arrived.

6. THE TREE OF LIFE - P.825

P.825 - §6 In the center of the Garden temple Van planted the long-guarded tree of life, whose leaves were for the "healing of the nations," and whose fruit had so long sustained him on earth. Van well knew that Adam and Eve would also be dependent on this gift of Edentia for their life maintenance after they once appeared on Urantia in material form.

P.825 - §7 The Material Sons on the system capitals do not require the tree of life for sustenance. Only in the planetary repersonalization are they dependent on this adjunct to physical immortality.

P.826 - §1 This superplant stored up certain space-energies which were antidotal to the age-producing elements of animal existence. The fruit of the tree of life was like a superchemical storage battery, mysteriously releasing the life-extension force of the universe when eaten. This form of sustenance was wholly useless to the ordinary evolutionary beings on Urantia, but specifically it was serviceable to the one hundred materialized members of Caligastia's staff and to the one hundred modified Andonites who had contributed of their life plasm to the Prince's staff, and who, in return, were made possessors of that complement of life which made it possible for them to utilize the fruit of the tree of life for an indefinite extension of their otherwise mortal existence.

P.826 - §4 When the plans of the Material Son went astray, Adam and his family were not permitted to carry the core of the tree away from the Garden. When the Nodites invaded Eden, they were told that they would become as "gods if they partook of the fruit of the tree." Much to their surprise they found it unguarded. They ate freely of the fruit for years, but it did nothing for them; they were all material mortals of the realm; they lacked that endowment which acted as a complement to the fruit of the tree. They became enraged at their inability to benefit from the tree of life, and in connection with one of their internal wars, the temple and the tree were both destroyed by fire; only the stone wall stood until the Garden was subsequently submerged. This was the second temple of the Father to perish.

P.834 - §6 While cooking was universally employed outside of the immediate Adamic sector of Eden, there was no cooking in Adam's household. They found their foods--fruits, nuts, and cereals--ready prepared as they ripened. They ate once a day, shortly after noontime. Adam and Eve also imbibed "light and energy" direct from certain space emanations in conjunction with the ministry of the tree of life.
P.842 - §6 Every time the Garden pair had partaken of the fruit of the tree of life, they had been warned by the archangel custodian to refrain from yielding to the suggestions of Caligastia to combine good and evil. They had been thus admonished: "In the day that you commingle good and evil, you shall surely become as the mortals of the realm; you shall surely die."

P.845 - §6 2. The Material Son and Daughter of Urantia, being also personalized in the similitude of the mortal flesh of this world, were further dependent on the maintenance of a dual circulatory system, the one derived from their physical natures, the other from the superenergy stored in the fruit of the tree of life. Always had the archangel custodian admonished Adam and Eve that default of trust would culminate in degradation of status, and access to this source of energy was denied them subsequent to their default.

P.857 - §4 It will be recalled that the one hundred Andonite germ plasm contributors were in turn made possessors of the organic complement of the tree of life so that the Satania life currents likewise invested their bodies. The forty-four modified Andonites who followed the staff into rebellion also mated among themselves and made a great contribution to the better strains of the Nodite people.

P.946 - §0 India and eastern Russia regard the tree spirits as being cruel. The Patagonians still worship trees, as did the early Semites. Long after the Hebrews ceased tree worship, they continued to venerate their various deities in the groves. Except in China, there once existed a universal cult of the tree of life.

P.1015 - §6 Though Machiventa lived after the manner of the men of the realm, he never married, nor could he have left offspring on earth. His physical body, while resembling that of the human male, was in reality on the order of those especially constructed bodies used by the one hundred materialized members of Prince Caligastia's staff except that it did not carry the life plasm of any human race. Nor was there available on Urantia the tree of life. Had Machiventa remained for any long period on earth, his physical mechanism would have gradually deteriorated; as it was, he terminated his bestowal mission in ninety-four years long before his material body had begun to disintegrate.

P.1623 - §26 Give us moment by moment the sustenance of the tree of life;

MIDSONITE TRANSPORT--STERILIZATION EFFECTS

P.400 - §7 The midsonite creatures live and function as reproducing beings on their magnificent worlds until they are one thousand standard years of age; whereupon they are translated by seraphic transport. Midsoniters are nonreproducing beings thereafter because the technique of dematerialization which they pass through in preparation for enseraphiming forever deprives them of reproductive prerogatives.

Simple time could also have been employed to transit at sub light speeds although I think it highly unlikely. You have the shrub, which even grows on the spheres of Havona, coming at the time of the arrival of the Planetary Prince, brought by the Melchizedeks, who are intimately connected with the origen and destiny of the Midsoniters. Melchizedeks , as the "elder brothers" of the local universe, have recourse in planetary crises and routine universe administration to emply techniques such as dematerialization, as they see fit ( they are , after all, a self-governing order).
Finally, there is more in life than is dreamed of in our philosophies, Meredith.

Thanks, Bill, for these references. We didn't think to look up "dematerialization".

It's interesting to note that the Melchezideks brought the tree of life, the shrub of Edentia.

They tell us the shrub was re-grown from its central core by Van and Amadon at their highland retreat (Lake Van?). Do you suppose they used the "bare root" method when they moved it? Apparently this shrub could grow at higher elevations where the seasons of the year would likely differ quite a bit in temperatures. And it could grow in the lowlands too. Van and Amadon are picking and ingesting parts of the shrub. It must have been an evergreen, as a deciduous shrub would loose its leaves when the sap was restrained (or whatever the mechanism is called that causes trees to loose their leaves).

I wonder why the shrub is not found on the system capitals? The Material Sons do not require it there. How do you suppose the permanent residents of the system sustain themselves?

(I know the UB does not tell us all of the fascinating details we would like to know. But I am an inquiring person and want to ask the questions anyway. I figure it this way: If I have a question about something in the book, it is highly likely some of you might also have a similar question. But in this case regarding the tree of life, the question arose from our study group.)

Meredith

I wonder if the tree is still among us. Maybe the Apple in the garden of Eden stems from some truth. An Apple is a fruit and the Tree did grow fruit. We really wouldn't be able to tell any way since the fruit would have a neutral effect on us If ingested. Just makes me wonder........

P.S. Why is a star revealed when an Apple is cut in Half? Coincidence??? I'm eating an Apple right now! LOL

LOL

Hi friend of W,

line 105: When the plans of the Material Son went astray, Adam and his family were not permitted to carry the core of the tree away from the Garden.

I like this focus on the "core" of the tree, I had not picked up on that before. Now I have this vision of one of those "Sausage Trees" from the African Serengeti, mostly trunk or core with small leaves.

My favourite Tree of Life. Adam and Eve (Sumerian Anu and Ea ?) growing the Tree from a pot?

Notice the staff and ring in the right hand of the “seated divinity”. These symbols were later often depicted in the hands of Sumerian Gods!

Picture text: ”Scene of worship. A devotee waters the sacred plant before a seated divinity, doubtless the god (Sumerian) Shamash. Archaic stele. Louvre.

Picture from ”New Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology”, Hamlyn 1959, Sixteenth impression 1982, page 50.

I often reflect on the effect of archaeologists coming up with evidence for Adam and Eden.
We got a kind of "dress rehearsal" thanks to Rob Sarmast and his team last year.

And just as interesting -- what will Jews / Muslims / Christians make of the fact
that a Melchizedek troubleshooter kick-started Abraham, and thus each
of their systems of religiousity? What a neat fact for attendees at the 2009
"Parliament of World Religions" to discover. ( link: 2009 Parliament )

HSTa, any news of Melchizedek from Archaeology?

Hi Nigel,

haven’t heard from Robert (Behz) Sarmast either, for a long time.

The next picture isn’t exactly from Archaeology, but interesting any way. One of the persons on the picture might be Dalai Lama? Some kind of “Parliament”?

PS. I had in mind to post some of my pictures about the geometry of space, later.

Well, this isn’t news, but when you said it I remembered that I have written earlier about the subject. According to the UB the old name of Jerusalem was “Uru-Salem” (meaning the City of Salem) as mentioned in the UB.

“Old Jerusalem” (see link below)

(Map by The Hebrew University, Dept. of Geography. On the right side of the upper part of the map, you might find the following names beneath each other):

- Mount Calvarie
- Golgotha
- The Wall of the Ancient City of Salem
- Mount Acra
- The City of Salem of Melchisedech
- Wall of Old Salem
- Herods House
- Pilate’s House
- Solomon’s Temple

My grandfather also mentions a cuneiform letter sent from “Urusalem” about the time when Melchizedek founded the City. In this letter the original name of Bethlehem appears.

K. Tallqvist become a honorary member of the American Oriental Society, Chicago, in 1945. He was a professor of Assyriology at our University. I will explain the text in Swedish from a book about his travel in Palestine around the year 1900.

You might translate the title of my grandfather’s book ”På Helig och Ohelig Mark ”, Reseskildringar från Orienten, as: “On Holy and Unholy Ground”, a travel account from the Orient, Helsingfors 1918. p. 249:

Some scholars have speculated that the name of Bethlehem actually originally contained a reference to a Canaanite form of Lahmu, rather than to the Canaanite word for "bread". That is essentially what K.T. is saying. But he refers to a cuneiform letter sent from Urusalem between 4000 and 3000 years ago!

I don’t have further information about this cuneiform letter. But many such old texts are kept by The British Museum in London. K.T. worked there for some time and he might have read this letter there.

UB p. 1015:
Within a few years Melchizedek had gathered around himself a group of
pupils, disciples, and believers who formed the nucleus of the later community
of Salem. He was soon known throughout Palestine as the priest of El Elyon,
the Most High, and as the sage of Salem. Among some of the surrounding tribes
he was often referred to as the sheik, or king, of Salem. Salem was the site
which after the disappearance of Melchizedek became the city of Jebus,
subsequently being called Jerusalem.

Melchizedek kept a school at Salem. They wrote on clay-tablets and had correspondence with Sumerian cities, especially Kish. The cuneiform letter that K.T. refers to, might have been one of these letters sent to some Sumerian city from Salem.

K.T. also describes that he saw “gods” (statues) that the Palestinians worshipped, by the name “Eljon”. This is undoubtedly a form of the word El-Elyon in the UB, connected to Melchizedek!

Boy, talk about "secondary works" lasting longer than "Just the facts, Ma'am" when it comes to what religionists CHOOSE to authoritively hang on to....

National Geographic is getting all their holiday episodes ABOUT Jesus out on the airwaves lately....learn something new everyday about people's imaginations - last night's show about "lost" gospels - Thomas and Gnostics - sure was out there.... :(
