Through a joint mission of the European Space Agency and NASA Ulysses probe traced the unknown reaches of space above and below the poles of the sun.
In an effort to resolve the differences between the measurements of the two spacecraft, IBEX scientists and Ulysses met in the EOS for three days in mid-February for data comparison and analysis. Among other reasons, determine how different galactic cloud're browsing through
and, in turn, what is our place in the universe?.
Previous measurements of Ulysses interstellar gas flow indicates the average galaxy faster orientation, which seemed to put our solar system in a region between two nearest clouds, the Local Interstellar Cloud Cloud interstellar and G, the latter which contains Alpha Centauri,our nearest star to three light years away.
However, the recent IBEX measurements seem to put our solar system in the local cloud, which seems to be consistent with what astronomers have found looking through the galaxy, where the solar system is on the leading edge of the cloud.Spectroscopic measurements through the galactic medium allow astronomers to see that the clouds are there and how they are moving.
Says Eberhard Moebius, UNH chief scientist of the IBEX mission, From this, and within certain levels of confidence, we can project the time paths and determine that the Sun has gone through environments where the heliosphere has been very small or very large, all that, as we have learned, has a significant influence on the radiation environment of the solar system and, ultimately, our planet.
With this cosmic road map in hand, scientists can try to connect the dots in time for evidence of the evolution of life on Earth, with its ups and downs and extinctions and changes in climate. * This is an area of research focus that we have achieved in just the last ten or fifteen years , says Moebius.
Research has opened a new window to measure the potential habitability of planets in a solar system that would also have a specific protective bubble, or * astrósfera *. This means that for exoplanets with astrósfera is much more likely that some sort of life has evolved since, like our heliosphere, the bubble would have provided damping force of galactic cosmic rays and lower levels allow different radiation to conduct genetic mutations and thus the development of life.
Möbius says: * Once we understand our environment, in which neighborhood we are, how it is and has been in the galactic medium that controls it, then we can modify our models and find other living quarters of the galaxy with many more scattered data .
Which brings us back to the business of the disparity between the data and the IBEX Ulysses about where we are right now.Dual data Could be the result of differences in the initial
measurement, subsequent analysis techniques, or real differences in space and time?
Möbius notes that cosmic standards as the difference between Ulysses spacetime = a mission that ran from 1990 to 2009 and took data for the interstellar gas by 2007 = and IBEX is a mere nano-blink, and is highly unlikely that an operating system on the scale of hundreds of thousands to millions of years may vary in any measurable way over a decade.
